Like us humans, livestock have what we call a thermoneutral zone. A thermoneutral zone is a temperature range in which they don’t need to expend energy to maintain normal body temperature.

While in the thermoneutral zone, animals can alter their behaviour. They can seek shelter from the wind, for example; they can grow thick hairs on their skin, for insulation against the winter cold.

These behaviours would not affect the dietary requirement of the animal.

The dietary requirement of the animal will only increase when its body temperature drops below the lower range of the thermoneutral zone.

Why would temperature affect an animal’s dietary requirement? You ask. The answer is simple. To combat cold stress, the animal must increase its metabolic rate to supply more body heat to itself. To supply more body heat to itself, the animal requires energy, which it receives from an increase in nutrition.

The impact of cold stress

When an animal’s body temperature drops well below normal, hypothermia becomes a major problem. Hypothermia can cause many negative effects on livestock.

Hypothermia can slow down metabolic process, for one. Furthermore, it can divert blood away from the extremities, cause frostbite, and even cause respiration and heart rate to drop.

The impact of heat stress

Historically, ambient temperatures would never have been considered a limiting factor for the UK’s milk production industry. You would think that in the cold, wintry island of the UK, heat would be the last problem for British farmers.

The evidence, however, begs to differ. Increasing evidence shows that even the low temperatures in British summers can lead to lower milk yields and reduced fertility.

High summer temperatures and high dew points can intensify heat stress on livestock, which will prevent them from cooling. The list of problems for heat stress is exhaustive. Here are two examples of the problems:

Heat stress can impair the reproductive ability in nursing cows and can also decrease growth rate.
