Calibration-Free Multi-Gas LEL Detection Across Four Sensor Models

The NevadaNano MPS™ Flammable Gas Sensor is a calibration-free OEM LEL sensor built to detect a broad spectrum of combustible gases  and gas mixtures with a single factory calibration, a 15-year sensor life, and no field calibration required.  Note that TrueLEL™ certification is provided in the case of Hydrogen or Methane.   Available in four models — the MPS™ 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 Ultra Low Power — the platform is trusted by world-class OEMs including Blackline Safety, Crowcon, and Teledyne for integration into both portable and fixed gas detectors across a wide range of industries.

Why It Matters

Catalytic bead sensors, the conventional technology for LEL gas detection, carry significant maintenance burdens: they require quarterly field calibration, are susceptible to sensor poisoning and saturation, and have relatively short service lives. These ongoing costs and failure modes drive up the total cost of ownership and create gaps in monitoring reliability — particularly problematic in hard-to-access or high-hazard installations. The MPS™ eliminates all of these issues through its MEMS-based Molecular Property Spectrometer™ technology, which measures the physical properties of gases directly rather than relying on chemical reactions that degrade over time.

All four MPS™ models share a common set of core capabilities: TrueLEL™ automatic multi-gas detection with real-time k-factor correction, 0.1% LEL resolution, built-in environmental compensation for temperature, humidity, and pressure, power-on self-test (POST) and built-in self-test (BIST) for continuous fail-safe operation, and intrinsic safety certification for Class I Division 1 (FM, CSA) and Zone 0 (ATEX, IECEx). Available in S4 (3-pin and 5-pin) and Mini form factors — with the exception of the MPS™ 6.0, which is S4 4-pin only — sensors output via UART digital bus or analogue, making the 3-pin S4 a direct drop-in replacement for catalytic bead pellistors.

The NevadaNano MPS™ Flammable Gas Sensor delivers the accuracy, longevity, and low maintenance that OEMs need to build gas detection instruments with lower lifetime costs and higher reliability than catalytic bead alternatives.

The Four MPS™ Flammable Gas Sensor Models

  • MPS™ 3.0 — 29 mW; clean air start-up; can be operated in inert environments; does not detect flammable gas during start-up; supply voltage 3.3–5.0 V DC; suited to fixed monitoring in inert or clean air environments
  • MPS™ 4.0 (production ends end of 2026 — MPS™ 5.0 recommended as replacement) — 29 mW; detects flammable gas during start-up (T90 <20 s from 104 s after power on); air start-up; supply voltage 3.3–5.0 V DC
  • MPS™ 5.0 — 27.3 mW; certified to EN 50271 and compliant with IEC 60079-29-1 Ed. 2.1 Annex A; detects flammable gas during start-up (T90 <20 s from 32 s after power on); includes watchdog timer; suited to connected worker safety and certified portable/fixed gas detectors; supply voltage 3.0–5.0 V DC
  • MPS™ 6.0 Ultra Low Power — 1.35 mW average (20× reduction vs. MPS™ 5.0); compliant with IEC 60079-29-1 Ed. 2.1 Annex A; detects flammable gas during start-up (T90 <20 s from 34 s after power on); UART digital output only (no analogue); S4 4-pin form factor only; suited to portable lone worker devices and wireless area monitors requiring maximum battery life; supply voltage 3.0–5.0 V DC
