Calibration-Free A1, A2L, and A3 Refrigerant Leak Detection for HVAC-R OEMs

The NevadaNano MPS™ Refrigerant Gas Sensor is a high-accuracy, calibration-free OEM sensor platform designed to detect A1, A2L, and A3 refrigerant gases across residential, commercial, and industrial HVAC and refrigeration applications. Available in three dedicated models — the MPS™ A1, MPS™ A2L, and MPS™ A3 — it covers the full spectrum of refrigerants currently in use, from established gases such as R-410A through to the newer low-GWP A2L refrigerants and natural A3 refrigerants such as R-290 propane.

As the refrigeration industry transitions away from high-GWP refrigerants towards mildly flammable A2L and highly flammable A3 alternatives, reliable leak detection becomes both more important and more technically demanding. Many existing sensor technologies struggle with the lower flammability limits and burn velocities of A2L gases, and can suffer from poisoning, saturation, or calibration drift over time. In independent testing by the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology Institute (AHRTI), the MPS™ was the only sensor among eleven evaluated to meet all 28 test criteria for A2L refrigerant leak detection — a result that underlines the gap between the MPS™ and conventional alternatives.

All three MPS™ models share a common set of core capabilities: no field calibration required for a 15-year operational life, built-in environmental compensation for temperature, humidity, and pressure, and self-diagnostics running every two seconds for continuous fail-safe operation. Both the S4 and Mini form factors are available, with the S4 carrying ATEX/IECEx intrinsic safety certification for use in hazardous locations. Output is via UART and analogue, with power consumption of 27–29 mW and supply voltage of 3.0–5.0 V DC.

The Three MPS™ Refrigerant Sensor Models

  • MPS™ A1 Sensor — detects R-410A; suited to comfort cooling and residential HVAC; range 1,700–130,000 ppm (static) / 5,100–130,000 ppm (dynamic); resolution 130 ppm
  • MPS™ A2L Sensor — detects R-32, R-454A, R-454B, R-454C, and R-1234ze; suited to residential HVAC and heat pumps; range 5–100% LFL depending on refrigerant; resolution 0.1% LEL; compliant with UL60335-2-40 (2022) Annex LL; ATEX/IECEx certified (S4)
  • MPS™ A3 Sensor — detects R-290 (propane); suited to commercial refrigeration, residential HVAC, and heat pumps; range 5–100% LEL; resolution 0.1% LEL; compliant with UL/IEC 60079-29-1 Annex A and UL/IEC 60335-2-40 (2022); ATEX/IECEx certified (S4)
