Calibration-Free Open-Air Methane Detection for OEM Emissions Monitoring Devices

The NevadaNano MPS™ Extended Range Methane Emissions Sensor is a low-power OEM sensor engineered for open-air methane gas emissions detection, measuring CH4 concentrations from 50 to 1,000,000 ppm with no field calibration required over its full operating lifetime. Available in two models — the MPS™ Extended Range and the MPS™ Extended Range Low Power — it is designed for integration into battery-powered and solar-powered monitoring devices deployed across oil and gas, industrial, landfill, and agricultural environments.

Conventional methane detection technologies carry significant ongoing maintenance burdens: periodic field calibration visits, susceptibility to poisoning by co-present gases such as hydrogen sulphide, and power demands that limit deployment in remote, off-grid locations. In oil and gas environments particularly, where H2S co-exposure is common and sites may be difficult or costly to access, these limitations translate directly into higher programme costs and greater risk of data gaps between inspections. The MPS™ Extended Range Methane Emissions Sensor is inherently poison-resistant, validated against 1,200 ppm-hours of H2S exposure, and also validated against siloxanes, NO2, HCN, SO2, Cl2, and NH3 — removing poisoning as a failure mode entirely. nevadanano

In field testing, the sensor detected methane emitted at 2 standard cubic feet per hour at distances of up to 10 metres, with near-zero false positives over weeks of continuous outdoor operation. Both models share a 50–1,000,000 ppm detection range, intrinsic safety certification for Class I Division 1 (FM, CSA) and Zone 0 (ATEX, IECEx), and a 15-year sensor life. The Low Power model delivers 15 mW average power consumption with a 4-second self-test cycle, while the standard model operates at 29 mW average with a 2-second self-test cycle. Both output via a 5-pin UART digital interface requiring no additional signal conditioning electronics. Note: this sensor is designed for open-air emissions detection and is not suited for safety applications or for detection of gradually accumulating concentrations in confined or poorly ventilated spaces. nevadanano

The NevadaNano MPS™ Extended Range Methane Emissions Sensor gives OEM device manufacturers a calibration-free, poison-resistant, low-power foundation for open-air methane emissions monitoring across some of the most demanding industrial environments in the world.

The Two MPS™ Extended Range Models

  • MPS™ Extended Range Low Power — 15 mW average power consumption; 4-second self-test cycle; FM, CSA, IECEx, ATEX certified; 50–1,000,000 ppm detection range; suited to battery and solar-powered remote deployments
  • MPS™ Extended Range — 29 mW average power consumption; 2-second self-test cycle; FM, CSA, IECEx, ATEX certified; 50–1,000,000 ppm detection range; suited to applications requiring faster self-test cadence

Typical Features

  • Open-air CH4 detection from 50 to 1,000,000 ppm
  • No field calibration required for 15+ years of operation
  • H2S poison-resistant; validated against H2S, siloxanes, NO2, HCN, SO2, Cl2, and NH3
  • Ultra-low power: 15 mW average (Low Power model) / 29 mW average (standard model)
